Mexico City is preparing to host the Football World Cup in 2026, which has motivated a financial restructuring to address the upcoming spending needs. Juan Pablo De Botton, secretary of administration and finance of the capital, highlighted the importance of transparency in resource management and explained that trusts have been created for mobility, water, and public safety projects.
According to De Botton, a financial structure has been established with a mixed fund to ensure that investment in infrastructure is permanent and beneficial for the population, with the intention of maintaining Mexico City as an important global destination. It is expected that five and a half million visitors will arrive next year, and the aim is that a good experience during the World Cup will translate into an increase in tourism in the following years.
Despite the country facing an economic slowdown, De Botton pointed out that Mexico City maintains favorable conditions for investment, with a solid financial sector. He noted that local revenues of the city are more significant than federal revenues, reflecting the strength of public finances. During the first quarter, there was an 11% increase in general revenues and an 18% increase in local revenues, thanks to collection efforts and austerity policies.
The financial strategy of the capital seeks to increase public and private investment while maintaining fiscal discipline. The tax benefits and discounts offered to taxpayers have resulted in an increase in tax collection, benefiting more than 2.5 million people in property taxes and vehicle ownership. De Botton encouraged entrepreneurs to continue investing in the city, highlighting the good timing and favorable business environment in the capital.
Amid a complex environment, De Botton emphasized that rating agencies have granted the highest credit rating to the capital's debt, demonstrating financial solidity. The financial restructuring in preparation for the 2026 Football World Cup aims to ensure that resources are used transparently and efficiently, focusing on key infrastructure projects for the city.
